Behind Our Body Scrubs: Choosing Ingredients With Care
There’s something lovely about a small moment of self-care. A warm shower, a familiar scent, a few minutes that belong entirely to you. At Love Thy Self, we want those moments to feel good. We also care about the decisions made long before a product reaches your bathroom.
That includes where ingredients come from, how they are sourced, and who we work with to bring our products to life. Our commitment to certified vegan body scrubs and non-GMO ingredients starts there.
Looking beyond the ingredient list
Beauty labels can leave you with more questions than answers. An ingredient’s name may tell you very little about its origin, and words like “natural” don’t necessarily explain whether animal-derived materials were involved.
For customers trying to shop in line with their values, that creates extra work. It also raises a wider challenge for beauty businesses: how do we make sourcing more transparent and take responsibility for the ingredients we choose?
Animal welfare is central to this conversation. So is the environmental impact of sourcing, including the land, water and resources involved in producing ingredients. Understanding those impacts takes more than choosing a label. It means asking questions throughout the supply chain.
A shared effort
We made the business decision to prioritise Vegan Society-certified body scrubs and non-GMO ingredients. Turning that decision into something customers can trust requires cooperation.
Our ingredient suppliers provide information about the materials they supply and their origins. Our manufacturers and formulators help us understand the complete formula and how it is produced. The Vegan Society provides independent assessment against its Vegan Trademark standards.
Our contribution is to bring that work together: setting expectations, requesting documentation, following up where information is missing, and making sourcing decisions that support our commitments.
Customers matter in this process, too. People seeking ethical skincare deserve clear information without having to become ingredient experts. Their questions remind us why this work needs to be visible.
What we put into it
Certification involves time and resources, including gathering ingredient information, coordinating with partners, supporting the application process and keeping records current.
We have chosen to make room for that work because we believe the reassurance it offers matters. The Vegan Trademark assesses products against standards covering animal-derived ingredients, animal testing and measures to minimise cross-contamination.
Our non-GMO ingredient commitment is considered separately and supported through supplier documentation. We keep these claims distinct so customers can understand what each one means.
These priorities also inform procurement and product development. When reviewing an ingredient or considering a new formulation, we need to look beyond its texture, fragrance or price. Its origin and the information available from the supplier belong in that decision.
Why these choices matter
Choosing vegan formulations supports our aim to avoid animal-derived ingredients and the animal use addressed by the certification standards. Independent checking also gives customers a clearer basis for choosing products that reflect their values.
There is an environmental responsibility here as well. Asking suppliers about ingredient origins helps us understand our supply chain and where further questions are needed. However, vegan or non-GMO status alone does not establish a product’s overall environmental footprint. Packaging, manufacturing and transport still matter.
We want to be honest about that. Responsible sourcing is ongoing work, and we have more to learn.
Keeping the commitment going
As Love Thy Self grows, we intend to maintain certification for our registered body scrubs, keep supporting information up to date and review relevant changes with our partners.
We will continue encouraging suppliers and manufacturers to share sourcing information and support responsible practices. We also want to make our own communication clearer as we learn.
You may only spend a few minutes using a body scrub. We believe the care behind it should go much further.
